Recycled Magazine Starburst

I’ve been looking at alot of home decor in stores and the internet, but I’m not going to spend hundreds even thousands of dollars when I know I can create these items for a much lesser price tag. This was created with 2 food network magazines, tacky glue,#2 pencil, wooden skewer, cardboard, hot glue, med-large cereal bowl, card stock, and a compact mirror .

Step 1: Go through old magazines and just start tearing out pages and setting aside. Make sure to get alot of colorful pages as well as just white pages with print.

Step 2: Take one piece of magazine paper and your #2 pencil. Place your pencil in a bottom corner of the paper and begin to roll the pencil up in the paper once you get to the top corner of the paper put a dab of tacky glue and continue to wrap the paper. You may have to hold it down for just a few seconds. Take your skewer and put it through one end of the rolled paper and push the pencil out. Continue to repeat this step until all your magazine pages are rolled.

Step 3: Take your cardboard and cut a doughnut shape out of it. Do not discard the rest. Take your hot glue gun and begin to put a small amount of glue at the tip of your magazine roll. Use the flat end of your skewer to push the magazine tip down. Continue to do this all the way around the cardboard.

Step 4: Take that extra cardboard and use your first doughnut shape as a guide draw another circle around that one, cut that space out and draw one more circle around the cardboard and that will be your second piece of cardboard. Carefully flip your starburst over and add hot glue to that second piece of cardboard and apply to the back of your starburst. Once attached flip back over.

Step 5: Take additional rolled pieces and hot glue them in between the pieces you attached earlier the same way. Go all the way around. Your starburst should really be looking full now.

Step 6: Take a cereal bowl medium to large in size and card stock any color you desire. Fold your card stock in half and trace the bowl on the stock. Cut it out and glue the two pieces of card stock together with tacky glue.

Step 7: Take an old compact mirror or you can go to the dollar tree and get a mirror over where the candles are and attach to your card stock with hot glue. Once that’s dry flip it over apply a ring of hot glue around the perimeter of the circle and attach to the center of the starburst.

To hang just put a finishing nail in the sheet rock and use the larger piece of cardboard on the back as your hanger.
